From the Anglican Church of Kenya [Anglican Patrimony]

The Anglican Patrimony is defined by the contemporary and historic usages of the Anglican Communion. The Roman Catholic Church accepts some of the Anglican Patrimony through the Ordinariates.  The following is from the contemporary usage of the Anglican Church in the nation of Kenya in its Eucharistic rite and shows forth both a deeply penitential emphasis as well as expressing great hope in the Holy Trinity:

Almighty God, 

you bring to light things hidden in darkness,

and know the shadows of our hearts:

cleanse and renew us by your Spirit,

that we may walk in the light

and glorify your name,

through Jesus Christ,

the Light of the world. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF PENITENCE

The people remain kneeling

Minister
Hear the words of challenge and comfort our Saviour Christ says to all who follow Him.

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (Luke 9:23,24)

Come unto me all who are tired of carrying your heavy loads, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

So, all of you who repent of your sins, who love your neighbours, and intend to live a new life following the way of Jesus, come with faith and take this holy sacrament to strengthen you.

Let us reverently confess our sins to Almighty God.

All  
Almighty God, Creator of all, you marvellously made us in your image; but we have corrupted ourselves and damaged your likeness by rejecting your love and hurting our neighbours. We have done wrong and neglected to do right We are sincerely sorry and heartily repent of our sins. Cleanse us and forgive us by the sacrifice of your Son; Remake us and lead us by your Spirit, the Comforter. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Minister
Almighty God, whose steadfast love is as great as the heavens are high above the earth, remove your sins from you, as far as the east is from the west, strengthen your life in his kingdom and keep you upright to the last day; through Jesus Christ, our merciful High Priest. Amen.

All 
Thank you, Father, for forgiveness. We come to your table as your children, not presuming but assured, not trusting ourselves but your Word; we hunger and thirst for righteousness, and ask for our hearts to be satisfied with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ the Righteous. Amen.

All  Almighty God, eternal Father, we have sat at your feet, learnt from your word and eaten from your table. We give you thanks and praise for accepting us into your family. Send us out with your blessing, to live and to witness for you in the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, the First Born from the dead. Amen.

All  God Most High, we thank you for welcoming us, teaching us, and feeding us. We deserve nothing from you but in your great mercy you have given us everything in your Son Jesus Christ. We love you and give ourselves to you to be sent out for your work; grant us your blessing, now and for ever. Amen.

OR
All  O God of our ancestors, God of our people, Before whose face the human generations pass away: We thank you that in you we are kept safe for ever, and that the broken fragments of our history are gathered up in the redeeming act of your dear Son, remembered in this holy sacrament of bread and wine. Help us to walk daily in the Communion of Saints, declaring our faith in the forgiveness of sins and the resurrection of the body. Now send us out in the power of your Holy Spirit to live and work for your praise and glory. Amen.

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on the Anti-Christ

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen said of the Anti-Christ:

“He will come disguised as the great Humanitarian; he will talk peace, prosperity, and plenty, not as means to lead us to God, but as ends in themselves. He will write books on the new idea of God to suit the way people live. 

[He will] induce faith in astrology so as to make not the will but the stars responsible for our sins. He will explain guilt away psychologically as repressed sex, make men shrink in shame if their fellowmen say they are not broadminded and liberal. 

"He will identify tolerance with indifference to right and wrong. He will foster more divorces under the disguise that another partner is ‘vital.’ He will increase love for love and decrease love for persons. He will invoke religion to destroy religion. He will even speak of Christ and say that he was the greatest man who ever lived. His mission, he will say, will be to liberate men from the servitudes of superstition and Fascism, which he will never define. 

"In the midst of all his seeming love for humanity and his glib talk of freedom and equality, he will have one great secret which he will tell to no one; he will not believe in God. And because his religion will be brotherhood without the fatherhood of God, he will deceive even the elect.

“He will set up a counter-Church, which will be the ape of the Church because he, the devil, is the ape of God. It will be the mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the Church as the mystical body of Christ. 

"In desperate need for God, he will induce modern man, in his loneliness and frustration, to hunger more and more for membership in his community that will give man enlargement of purpose, without any need of personal amendment and without the admission of personal guilt. These are days in which the devil has been given a particularly long rope.”

Canonisation of Blessed John Henry Newman / Cardinal Müller's "Manifesto of Faith"

Two notes for today:

With the news that Blessed John Henry Newman will be canonised and recognized as a Saint of God in the Universal Church, many will be very pleased and grateful.  Deo gratias.

Cardinal Müller's "Manifesto of Faith" has drawn the most bitter attacks from Cardinal Kasper and others who espouse a generally modernist position of rupture with the tradition and faith received from the saints.

A Leonine Prayer and Christian Unity

During the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity (also known as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity),  the following Leonine prayer seems especially valuable to me for inclusion with other personal prayers at this time:

O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with favour on Thy people who cry to Thee; and through the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Saint Joseph her Spouse, of Thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, in mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of our holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pope Pius XII on what the Liturgy means

Too few understand what the sacred liturgy is about and to whom it is directed. 

I think it is time to recall the definition given by Pope Pius XII in Mediator Dei :

“The sacred liturgy is, consequently, the public worship which our Redeemer as Head of the Church renders to the Father, as well as the worship which the community of the faithful renders to its Founder, and through Him to the heavenly Father. It is, in short, the worship rendered by the Mystical Body of Christ in the entirety of its Head and members.”

The full text of Paragraph 20 follows:

20. This result is, in fact, achieved when Christ lives and thrives, as it were, in the hearts of men, and when men's hearts in turn are fashioned and expanded as though by Christ. This makes it possible for the sacred temple, where the Divine Majesty receives the acceptable worship which His law prescribes, to increase and prosper day by day in this land of exile of earth. Along with the Church, therefore, her Divine Founder is present at every liturgical function: Christ is present at the august sacrifice of the altar both in the person of His minister and above all under the eucharistic species. He is present in the sacraments, infusing into them the power which makes them ready instruments of sanctification. He is present, finally, in prayer of praise and petition we direct to God, as it is written: "Where there are two or three gathered together in My Name, there am I in the midst of them." [(22) Matthew 18:20] The sacred liturgy is, consequently, the public worship which our Redeemer as Head of the Church renders to the Father, as well as the worship which the community of the faithful renders to its Founder, and through Him to the heavenly Father. We have enjoyed many things, but our happiness has het to be earned. We have served God—how little—and we have still to find out what the service of God truly is, and who the God truly is whom we serve. Yet in every moment while time thus bafflingly slips from us, we are in the hands of him who is eternal and changes not. Our Christ, the Christ we offer up here, the Christ on whom we feed here, the Christ whose body we are here, is eternal God as well as changeable man. Our grasp of eternity is small, but eternity grasps, fills and uses us. For we are the body of an eternal Christ."
